The Nursing Home Paradox

By Dana Larsen on June 28, 2012

A recent A Place for Mom survey discovered that 33% of searchers looking for nursing homes move into active senior living. Learn how senior living care options have changed (for the better!) and why the American public still needs to be informed.

Nursing Home ParadoxMany children of aging parents reach a point where they?re faced with finding the next level of care for their mother or father. Whether this decision comes unexpectedly or as a gradual inevitability, the difficult, exhausting search for the just right nursing home begins.

But is that the right search? According to A Place for Mom?s analysis of visitor search patterns, ?in an overwhelming majority of cases, a nursing home is not the answer. That the very phrase ?nursing home? can send offspring on a ?wild goose chase? for the wrong type of facility, altogether.

The Reality: Nursing Homes Are Only A Fraction of Today?s Care Choices

Out of 100 families searching for senior care online for themselves or loved ones, only 13 ended up in nursing homes. The rest found more suitable alternatives: 59 went to active senior living communities, 34 went to assisted living, 13 to residential care, 5 went to home care, 3 to respite care, 7 to retirement communities and 17 to Alzheimer?s care.

Clearly, there?s a huge language barrier when it comes to determining the right placement for the elderly. How efficiently the next generation of Americans 65 and older?which will grow by 3 percent for the next 20 years?figures out where to spend the rest of their lives depends on how quickly they can decipher the jargon and countless variables that go into determining just the right placement.

What Should You ?Google? When Looking for Senior Housing?

The need for elder care industry experts is growing fast. Social workers and the Area Agency on Aging are preparing for the influx aging baby boomers. In fact, the nation?s 65+ demographic, which currently accounts for 13 percent of the overall population, is expected to more than double by 2050 to more than 89 million (and 20 percent of the population), according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Some of the care options include the following:

The industry is growing to meet the needs of this burgeoning group of seniors, which will reach more than 70 million by 2030. It?s growing in size, but also in diversity. A Place for Mom looks ahead to meet the varied needs of seniors, and skips ahead from where a Google search for ?nursing homes? may start.
