DustyCorners at OnlineAuction.com posted an article about an experience she recently had with an online business and decided that it was worth posting about!! I agreed, so I copied this over to the OLA Team Blog to share. This brings up the question - How do you want your customers to see YOU?

It seems the generation after the baby boomers have a different perspective on what customer service really means. Is it more convenient for the business or the customer?

My recent experience with an established business has prompted this post today.

Scenario: Going through my late mother's porcelain dolls to sort out what may have some value from the everyday low end dolls.

I found an all porcelain (no cloth body) doll that needed finished and dressed. The back of the head was marked Germany and the body was marked Byron with other information. I recognized this to be more on the expensive side of dollmaking so off I went on the internet to find what current going prices may be. (what would I do without internet LOL)

I found a company that sold various supplies of doll making, they even have a catalog to order. Smile. Well, I don't need a catalog, just want to find a price on this particular doll body and head.
Ok, found them!

Where? Oh, I see a FAQ section, maybe they have the answer in there..........

FAQ section I find this: I see the item I want but no item number or price. How do I find it?

You haven't scrolled down far enough on the screen. The photo and description appear at the top of the screen. The item number and price appear below this.

After about 5 minutes of trying to figure this out............... I almost give up. Then I see they have a facebook page!!!! So I go there, but nothing noted I can use so I just send them a message and got a reply today.

Me: "Hello, I am having trouble using your website. I see the Byron doll parts I want, and cannot find the price.

Your FAQ states to scroll the page, and I have, all the way to the bottom and checked the sides. No prices.

I tried another browser and that is not the problem.

How do I find a price and shipping cost of the Byron Doll Style 36 B-157, 5pc side slant on your website?

Their answer: "Hi Dusty, The item numbers we use are all 8 digit numbers. So the first step is to find our number for that mold. If you can call me at the office on Thurs aft or Friday I will be happy to work with you on that. I can consult our catalogs there to come up with the right number! Needless to say, but I am not spending any more time with this company.

First of all, they should have clearly stated which items are Not available on their catalog. Second, I gave her all the info of Their Product in my question, so why didn't she just look it up and let me know!!!!!!!!!!

Am I expecting too much from a customer's side of a business? All I wanted was a price of a product I found in a current catalog.

This company has been around for over 50 years, so my non-purchase won't hurt them at all. But what about the small business? Many small companies today need every sale possible. Could you afford to lose even one customer because of the customer service offered (or lack of) ??"

Dusty's post really points out a not so surprising attitude nowdays. Is your business big enough to "pooh-pooh" ANY customer, big or small? Perhaps this customer may not buy today but what about future buys? Is your website clear to the customer? Can they locate the necessary tools to make a decision quickly and easily (after all, a lot of sales are impulse shopping!! If they can't find it, they can't buy!!)?

So, for anyone in eCommerce, take a look from a customers perspective . . . . you might learn a thing or two about your own business!!

Unplug! Too Much Light at Night May Lead to Depression | Health ...

Here?s another reason to log off at a reasonable hour: exposure to dim lighting at night ? such as that generated by a TV screen, computer or night-light ? may lead to depressive symptoms, new animal research suggests.

A study from Ohio State University Medical Center found that hamsters with chronic exposure to dim light at night showed signs of depression within just a few weeks: reduced physical activity compared with hamsters living in normal light-dark conditions, as well as less interest in sugar water (a treat for the hamsters), greater signs of distress when placed in water, and changes in the brain?s hippocampus that are similar to brain changes seen in depressed people.

?The results we found in hamsters are consistent with what we know about depression in humans,? Tracy Bedrosian, the first author the on the new study, told reporters.

Mood disorders are by no means the only health condition linked to artificial lighting and screen time at night. Earlier this year, the American Medical Association (AMA) put out a disturbing summary of adverse health effects from nighttime lighting, noting that artificial lights disrupt circadian rhythms and alter the body?s normal hormonal responses. In particular, when people spend too little time in darkness, it seems that the body suppresses release of the hormone melatonin, which ? among other things ? is thought to fight tumor growth and cancers. Other health conditions affected by changes in circadian rhythms, according to the AMA report, may include obesity, diabetes?and reproductive problems.

?The good news is that people who stay up late in front of the television and computer may be able to undo some of the harmful effects just by going back to a regular light-dark cycle and minimizing their exposure to artificial light at night,? Bedrosian says. ?That?s what the results we found in hamsters would suggest.?

Those animals? depressive symptoms, at least, went away once the hamsters returned to a schedule that included eight full hours of total darkness per day.

Bedrosian and her colleagues say that, among humans, exposure to artificial lighting at night has surged over the past 50 years, a trend that happens to coincide with large increases in depression prevalence. Light pollution can come from TV and computer screens, other electronic displays and ambient sources such as streetlights, passing traffic and neighboring buildings, in addition to overhead lighting within the home.

For their study, the Ohio State researchers also investigated molecular mechanisms that may cause the brain changes associated with nighttime lighting.?The scientists found that a cell-signaling protein, or cytokine, known as a hippocampal TNF (tumor necrosis factor) played a limited role. They demonstrated that by inhibiting TNF signaling, some of the depressive effects of light at night could be reversed in the hamsters. The results are published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.

Israel Preparing for Action in Syria, Says Former Mossad Chief

Former Mossad chief Danny Yatom said on Thursday that Israel is preparing for the possibility of military action in Syria, in case its chemical weapons were to end up in the hands of Hizbullah or other terrorist organizations in the region.

Yatom spoke to the British Sky News, which reported that Israel is deeply concerned that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad may deliberately give Hizbullah chemical weapons or that they could end up in the hands of other terror groups

In either case, this could lead to a regional war, Yatom told the network.

?The conventional wisdom should be that we cannot exclude a non-conventional attack on Israel,? he said. ?We would have to pre-empt in order to prevent it. We need to be prepared to launch even military attacks? and military attacks mean maybe a deterioration to war.?

Judge Declines to Intervene as NYC Teachers Get Jobs Back

Judge Joan B. Lobis has declined to put on hold a recent decision by an arbitrator that said that the New York City Department of Education must allow up to 4,000 teachers to return to their jobs. Lobis?s refusal to grant the city?s request for a temporary restraining order means that, at least for now, Scott Buckhheit?s decision that the DOE violated the teachers? contract will stand ? at least until a full hearing on the issue takes place on July 24th.

The teachers affected were from 24 struggling schools that were closed by the city. The buildings that housed the shuttered institutions were turned over to new schools which are scheduled to open this year. Teachers who sought positions in the newly-open classrooms were required by the district to reapply for their jobs, which was found to be in violation of the union?s contract.

The city says it received 26,000 applications from teachers who wanted to work in the 24 schools, interviewed 2,000 candidates and offered jobs to 1,100 teachers. It argued that replacing staff members was a central part of its improvement plan, and that any delay would harm the 30,000 students attending the schools. But the union countered that its contract already gives the city the right to remove poorly performing teachers.

Michael A. Cardozo, one of the attorneys representing the city, said that although he was disappointed that the judge decided not to put the decision on hold, he was optimistic that once the full details of the case were known, the arbitrator?s decision would be overturned. Maxwell Leighton, who argued that the request for the restraining order should be granted in Judge Lobis?s courtroom, said that Buckhheit?s decision was outside scope of his job and infringed on matters of education policy.

Although Leighton argued that the decision could cause ?irreparable harm? to the city?s plans to overhaul consistently underperforming schools, Lobis seemed unconvinced, and asked if the city planned to offer any other kind of assistance to the new schools besides a new staff.

Mr. Leighton responded that the schools would risk losing federal school improvement grants if it couldn?t move ahead with its plans. However Dina Kolker, a lawyer representing the United Federation of Teachers, countered that the city had already pledged to move ahead with its instructional and programmatic changes at the schools regardless of whether it won the federal funds. She also said the arbitrator had stuck to contractual matters, not education policy, and that the city should respect his ruling.

The lawyer for the United Federation of Teachers said that the union will work with the district to find positions for all 4,000 teachers in compliance with the arbitrator?s decision.

Apple demands retailers to cease selling Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Apple recently sent out various emails demanding retailers to cease the act of ?importing, offering to sell, or selling within the United States,? the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.? Apparently, Apple assumes that it?s justifiable to go after retailers that affiliate themselves with Samsung.

The following email was sent to one such retailer:

Re: Apple Inc. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., et al.
United States District Court, Northern District of California, Case No. C-12-00630 (LHK)

We represent Apple Inc. in the above-referenced action.

We enclose a copy of the June 29 preliminary injunction order entered by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in this case together with a copy of Apple?s U.S. Patent No. 8,086,604 (the ?604 patent?).? With the posting of the requisite bond, the order is now in effect.

The order provides as follows:

For the foregoing reasons, Apple?s motion for a preliminary injunction is GRANTED.? Accordingly, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.; Samsung Electronics America, Inc.; and Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC; its officers, directors, partners, agents, servants, employees, attorneys, subsidiaries, and those acting in concert with any of them, are enjoined from making, using, offering to sell, or selling within the United States, or importing into the United States Samsung?s Galaxy Nexus and any products that is no more than colorably different the specified product and infringes U.S. Patent No. 8,086,604

(emphasis added).

As the italicized language provides, the order applies not only to the named Samsung entities, but also to anyone ?acting in concert? with them.? Apple thus believes that the order extends to you because you may be selling, offering to sell, or importing Samsung?s Galaxy Nexus.

Please comply with the order by ceasing immediately to engage in any of the specified acts (e.g., importing, offering to sell, or selling within the United States) in connection with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and any product that is no more than colorably different from it and infringes the ?604 patent.? At a minimum, Apple believes compliance with the Courter?s order requires immediately removing for sale the Galaxy Nexus from all physical and online venues under your direction or control.

It appears that Apple is hell bent on closing down all avenues of Galaxy Nexus distribution in the United States.? Samsung may have the pocket to support the legal battles against Apple, but the small time retailers may not.?

Retailers that have strong ties with Apple such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy may consider compliance, but there are still others that may not follow through with Apple?s request.?

Nose landing gear tested for Dream Chaser spacecraft

ScienceDaily (July 12, 2012) ? NASA partner Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) has completed a successful test of the nose landing gear for its full-scale Dream Chaser engineering flight test vehicle. The completed test and an upcoming flight test are part of SNC's Commercial Crew Development Round 2 (CCDev2) agreement with NASA's Commercial Crew Program.

The gear test is an important milestone to prepare for the upcoming approach and landing test of the Dream Chaser Space System later this year. It evaluated the impact the nose landing gear will experience on touchdown in order to ensure a safe runway landing.

SNC is one of seven companies developing commercial crew transportation capabilities to ferry U.S. astronauts to and from low Earth orbit and the International Space Station. The Dream Chaser is the only spacecraft under CCDev2 that is winged and designed to land on a conventional runway. It is designed to carry as many as seven astronauts to space.

"The landing gear system must perform flawlessly, just like the space shuttle orbiter's did, for the safe return of the crew," CCP program manager Ed Mango said. "It's great to see that SNC is building on that experience while developing the Dream Chaser spacecraft."

SNC tested the spacecraft's main landing gear in February. This nose landing gear test completes the milestones leading up to the upcoming approach and landing test, which will complete the CCDev2 partnership.

"This test marks a significant point in the development of the Dream Chaser orbital crew vehicle. As the last milestone before free flight of the Dream Chaser spacecraft, we are now preparing for the approach and landing tests to be flown later this year," said Jim Voss, SNC vice president of space exploration systems and program manager for the Dream Chaser.

All of NASA's industry partners, including SNC, continue to meet their established milestones in developing commercial crew transportation capabilities under CCDev2.

Mexico paper won't cover violence after attack

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? The El Manana newspaper in the northern Mexico border city of Nuevo Laredo announced that it will stop covering violent criminal disputes after suffering a second grenade attack against its offices in two months.

Other northern Mexican newspapers have quietly adopted similar policies of not covering drug cartel violence to protect their staffs against threats and violent attacks including kidnappings and murders carried out by gangs that either don't want their activities to appear in print, or are angered by coverage of their rivals.

But El Manana's announcement Tuesday was unusual because it was public. The paper did not say who it thought was behind the attack earlier in the day, nor give a possible motive.

"We ask for the public's comprehension and will refrain, for as long as needed, from publishing any information related to the violent disputes our city and other regions of the country are suffering," the paper said in an editorial. Nuevo Laredo, like much of Tamaulipas state, has been the scene of bloody battles between the Zetas drug gang and the Gulf cartel, supported by allies in the Sinaloa cartel.

"The company's editorial and administrative board has been forced to make this regrettable decision by circumstances we are all familiar with, and by the lack of adequate conditions for freely exercising professional journalism," according to the El Manana statement. "We will only address the (violent crime) issue through the opinions of professional analysts who study the phenomenon in an intelligent and responsible way."

Also Tuesday, gunmen threw grenades and opened fire on two buildings belonging to the El Norte newspaper in the northern state of Nuevo Leon. No injuries were reported in those attacks, and that newspaper has not announced any change in coverage.

The newspaper reported Monday that employees of a local motor vehicle bureau were suspected of improperly providing thousands of license plates that were used to make stolen cars appear to be legitimately licensed vehicles that were then sold to unsuspecting buyers.

El Manana and one of El Norte's offices, home to a weekly local supplement of the paper, both have been attacked before.

"It is appalling that three Mexican media outlets, two of which have been attacked repeatedly in the past, were violently targeted in a single day," said Carlos Laur?a, CPJ's senior program coordinator for the Americas. "Mexican authorities must fully investigate these crimes, provide protection to the outlets, and ensure that the journalists can work without fearing for their lives."

Since 2000, 81 journalists have been killed and 16 kidnapped in the drug war, the Mexican government's human rights commission says. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists says 48 journalists have been murdered or disappeared since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against drug cartels in December 2006.

Some of the Mexican papers that have made similar decisions not to cover drug violence continue to print crime sections, but fill them with stories about traffic accidents. Others have decided to protect themselves by covering homicides only by printing police statements, without investigating. Still others continue to file stories, but try to avoid mentioning the name of any specific gang or cartel.

?Other than that I can?t predict what?s going to happen as far as percentages for their touches.?

Spiller has the kind of open-field ability to split wide, but both backs have shown they could be the guy if need be. Managing their expectations will be central to Gailey?s job this year, because if he can keep them focused on team goals, there?s a chance they could give the Bills offense the kind of balance it needs.

This fight would tie up two different belts as Silva and Jones prepared for their fight. Do you remember how long we had to wait around for Sonnen/Silva and Jones' bout with Rashad Evans?

4. Neither of them want the fight. When champs want to move across weight classes, they should at least want the fight to happen. Jones, who is preparing for his Sept. 1 fight against Dan Henderson, tweeted his lack of interest in a bout with Silva.

"Man my man ?#AndersonSilva? went to work tonight, consistently amazing," Jones said. "I guess Anderson said he had no interest in fighting me at tonight's press conference, I feel the same way about him. Nothing but respect."

It has nothing to do with either man not wanting the challenge or "being afraid," as I'm sure will get mentioned in the comment section. It has to do with their focus on their own weight classes, and participating in fights that make sense for them.

Cuba Cholera Outbreak Contained So Far: Official

HAVANA, July 10 (Reuters) - A cholera outbreak in Cuba blamed for at least three deaths has been mostly contained so far to the eastern city of Manzanillo and surrounding towns, with just a few scattered cases confirmed elsewhere in the country, a public health official told Reuters on Tuesday.

The official, with daily access to information on efforts to control the outbreak, and who asked that her name not be used, said that along with the three confirmed deaths there were two suspected ones, all in the Manzanillo area.

There have been reports that at least 15 people had died and the illness had spread to other parts of Cuba, but she said that was not true.

Current cases of the disease may stem from someone travelling from Haiti, where there is a cholera epidemic, the official said.

"?We have diagnosed one case in Havana, another in central Camaguey and a few others around the country, and all these people had been in the Manzanillo area," she said, adding that other potential cases were under observation.

Residents traveling by public transportation from Granma province, where Manzanillo is located, are being checked before departure and upon arrival at their destination, then followed by the country's vast network of community-based doctors, the official explained.

Cholera is generally not fatal but can kill in just a few hours when diarrhea and vomiting cause dehydration, especially among the elderly.

The official said the illness runs its course within a week, making it relatively easy to track. She said the reports of inflated death tolls and a spreading outbreak may be a result of Cuba's cautious approach to the situation.

"?Community clinics are checking patients with severe diarrhea, which is common here during the summer, and if they meet certain criteria they are hospitalized for further study, which their neighbors assume means they have cholera, when few if any do," she said.

The lack of official information also has led to much speculation and rumor.

In its only statement so far, the government confirmed on July 3 rumors of the cholera outbreak in a brief statement, saying 53 cases had been diagnosed and three elderly people had died.

EXTREME MEASURES IN GRANMA

Another well placed source in Granma said that as of Monday there were 85 confirmed cases, with a few hundred others under study and hundreds of health and other personnel working to snuff out the outbreak.

"Manzanillo is a city where there was no water system and thousands of homes relied on wells and latrines, many of which are still in use," he said.

"Rivers, streams, wells and latrines flooded in June due to heavy rainfall, contaminating many wells and causing thousands of cases of severe diarrhea, of which 85 have tested positively for the cholera germ," he said.

Residents in Granma province said they were being kept informed of the situation and given daily instructions to take preventive measures through local television and radio.

"They are giving instructions day and night about the measures we should take," Manzanillo construction worker Roberto said in a telephone interview, preferring not to give his full name.

"The public health people are all over the place and it appears they have it controlled, but I'm taking no chances," he said.

Neither was housewife Maria Elena, who said she was traveling to neighboring Santiago de Cuba to buy food even though local authorities said cooking meat and produce killed the bacteria.

"I'd rather exaggerate precautions than be sorry for a problem in the family later," she said, also not giving her full name.

HAITI CONNECTION

There have been no cholera outbreaks reported in Cuba since well before the 1959 revolution and the creation of a national health system by the Communist government.

Hundreds of Cuban doctors and nurses have worked for over a decade in Haiti which has battled a cholera outbreak that has killed more than 7,000 people since that country's 2010 earthquake.

"?With so many of our health and other professionals working in Haiti, and given that there are hundreds of Haitians studying medicine and other careers in eastern Cuba, we knew it was just a matter of time before there was an outbreak and were prepared," the public health official said.

"We are actually at a relatively low state of alert, as neither Manzanillo nor Granma are quarantined, and no local commissions have been set up for cholera, except in Granma," she said.

Cuba lies closer to Haiti than any other Caribbean country, with the exception of the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the crisis stricken country and has reported more than 21,500 cholera cases and 363 deaths since the Haiti epidemic began.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman was released from jail Friday for a second time while he awaits his second-degree murder trial for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman left the Seminole County Jail a day after Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester granted a $1 million bail with strict conditions. He wore a white shirt and dress jacket as he walked out and jumped into an SUV, ignoring shouted questions from nearby reporters.

The neighborhood watch leader is required to stay in Seminole County. He was allowed to leave Florida after his first release in April. He must be electronically monitored, can't open a bank account, obtain a passport or set foot on the grounds of the local airport. He has a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.

"He's very happy to be out," Don West, one of Zimmerman's attorneys, told reporters outside the jail. "Certainly it's been a sobering experience spending the last month in jail in that kind of environment."

Zimmerman had been released on a $150,000 bond in April, but the judge revoked it last month after prosecutors presented evidence that he and his wife misled the court about how much money they had available to pay for the bond. They didn't tell the judge that donations from a website for Zimmerman's legal defense had raised around $135,000 at the time of his first bond hearing.

Prosecutors argued Zimmerman and his wife talked in code during recorded jailhouse conversations about how to transfer the donations to different bank accounts. For example, George Zimmerman at one point asked how much money they had. She replied "$155." Prosecutors allege that was code for $155,000. Their reference to "Peter Pan" was code for the PayPal system through which the donations were made, prosecutors said.

Shellie Zimmerman faces arraignment at the end of the month on a perjury charge; she was freed on bond.

Zimmerman's attorneys said Thursday that there was $211,000 in an account, which included the amount raised from Zimmerman's website and also money generated from another website set up by his legal team. An additional $20,000 was raised in the day after Lester issued the $1 million bond order.

Zimmerman had to pay a bond company $100,000 but also needed $1 million in collateral to secure the bail, his legal team said.

West refused to comment on what was being used as collateral after Zimmerman left the jail.

"We worked that out," West said.

Zimmerman will stay in a "safe house" before relocating to a permanent home, and he has hired a security team, according to information posted on a website run by his legal team.

Shortly before Zimmerman's release, the Rev. Al Sharpton criticized Zimmerman for raising money through online donations. The civil rights leader was in New Orleans with Martin's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton.

"Now we see where they're soliciting money, saying, 'If you would have done the same thing, send money to help with his bond,' showing no remorse over the loss of human life," Sharpton said.

During Zimmerman's second bond hearing, his attorney, Mark O'Mara, said that his client was confused, fearful and experienced a moment of weakness when he and his wife misled the court.

The judge didn't buy it and expressed his unhappiness with Zimmerman and his wife in his second bond order. He accused Zimmerman of making plans to flee to avoid prosecution, misleading O'Mara by not disclosing the money from the website and trying to manipulate the judicial system.

"Under any definition, the defendant has flaunted the system," Lester wrote.

But the judge said current law limited his ability to deny a second application for bond.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and claims the shooting was self-defense under the state's "stand your ground" law. Zimmerman and Martin got into a fight last February inside a gated community in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman was the neighborhood watch leader for the community and Martin was visiting his father's fiance, who lived there.

The "stand your ground" law allows individuals to use deadly force provided they are doing nothing illegal and relieves them of a duty to retreat if they believe their lives are in jeopardy. The law allows defendants to make their self-defense case at a hearing presided over by a judge and without the use of a jury. If the judge deems self-defense was justified, the case can be dismissed without going to trial.

The 44 days between the shooting and Zimmerman's arrest inspired nationwide protests, led to the departure of the Sanford, Fla. police chief and prompted a U.S. Justice Department probe.

Martin's parents and supporters claim that the unarmed teenager was targeted because he was black and that Zimmerman started the confrontation that led to the shooting. Zimmerman's father is white and his mother is Hispanic.
